Buyer intent mapping is the foundation of every content engagement we run. Without it, content is a calendar full of vaguely relevant work. With it, every piece has a defined role in moving a buyer one step closer to a call. Here's the framework.
What buyer intent mapping is
It's the process of classifying every target query — every question your buyers ask — by where the reader sits in their buying journey. Then matching content format and CTA to that stage.
It takes two to three weeks for a complete map. It's the foundation everything else is built on, so we don't shortcut it.
The four stages
Different practitioners use different stage counts. We use four because they map cleanly to content formats.
- Aware — buyer knows they have a problem, doesn't know the solution exists. Format: educational long-form. CTA: subscribe / save / next read.
- Considering — buyer knows solutions exist, doesn't know which. Format: method explanations, frameworks. CTA: download / book audit.
- Comparing — buyer is evaluating options. Format: comparison pages, alternatives, pricing. CTA: book call / get quote.
- Ready — buyer is choosing a vendor. Format: case studies, proof, booking flow. CTA: book call now.
How to build the map
Start with the questions your buyers actually ask — sales call transcripts, support tickets, AI prompt panels, search console queries. Classify each by stage. Group similar questions into clusters. Assign each cluster to a content format and a CTA. Sequence by impact (ready and comparing first; aware last).
Why most content fails this test
Most blog calendars are full of aware-stage content. Aware-stage content is fine but it doesn't book calls. The library that produces revenue is the one with conversion-grade content at the bottom of the funnel — comparing and ready stages — first.
Frequently asked questions
What is buyer intent mapping?
Classifying every target query by where the reader sits in their buying journey, then building content matched to that stage.
How many stages?
We use four: aware, considering, comparing, ready. Each gets a different content format and different CTA.
How long does this take?
Two to three weeks for a complete map. It's the foundation for everything that comes next, so we don't shortcut it.
What if I don't have search data yet?
Start with sales call transcripts, support tickets, and AI prompt panels. Search data is a useful overlay but not the only signal.
