ChatGPT's browsing mode fetches live web results, ranks them through its own scoring, and surfaces 3–6 citations per answer. The pages it picks share a recognisable pattern. This guide walks through the checklist we run on every client site to maximise the chance of being cited.
Step 1: be in Bing
ChatGPT's browsing layer is built on Bing. Most marketers ignore Bing because the traffic is small, but the leverage is enormous: a top-10 Bing ranking is the single biggest predictor of a ChatGPT citation in our client data. Submit your sitemap to Bing Webmaster Tools, fix any crawl errors, and treat it like a second Google.
Step 2: write for extraction
Open every article with a clear, one-paragraph answer to the title question. Use question-shaped H2s. Include a TL;DR block with 3–5 bullet points. Add a FAQ section at the bottom with FAQPage schema. These four moves alone roughly double citation frequency in our tracked panels.
- TL;DR at the top.
- Question-shaped H2 for each section.
- Direct answer in the first sentence of each section.
- FAQ block with schema at the bottom.
Step 3: build entity authority
A strong Organization entity helps ChatGPT recognise your brand across every query. That means a complete About page, Organization JSON-LD, consistent NAP across the web, founder/author bios with sameAs links to LinkedIn, and mentions on at least 10–20 trusted third-party sites in your category.
Step 4: refresh and re-publish
ChatGPT favours pages that look maintained. Re-publish your top pages every 60–90 days with substantive updates (new data, new examples, fresh year in the title). Update the modified date in your schema. Citation rates respond.
Frequently asked questions
Does ChatGPT only use Bing?
Browsing pulls heavily from Bing, but ChatGPT also blends its training data and partner sources. A multi-channel approach (Bing + Google + third-party mentions) is the safest.
How long until I see citations?
If your page is already indexed in Bing, citations can appear within days. Building a new page from scratch usually takes 3–8 weeks to become a reliable citation.
Do I need ChatGPT plugins or GPTs?
Not for citations. Plugins and custom GPTs are useful product surfaces but they're separate from the browsing citation pipeline.
